The lowdown
About The Oompah Band
The Oompah Band was established in 2001 and plays foot stomping, thigh slapping German tunes in the Bavarian style, aiming to give any event a Hofbrauhaus feeling. The core band is a four piece of clarinet, tuba, squeeze box and trumpet, fronted by a clarinettist who also leads the singing and demonstrates yodelling. For larger venues they can grow to a six piece or a full eight piece band.
A booking brings two 50 minute sets. The first is mainly traditional Bavarian music and the second moves to pop and commercial numbers, with audience participation running through both: singing, swaying, clapping, a chance for couples to learn the polka and, usually, a yodelling competition. The drinking song Ein Prosit returns again and again. They bring their own PA, microphones, lights and background music for the breaks.
Based in the UK, they have played small clubs, private parties and large beer festivals for audiences of 50 to 5,000, in London, Dublin, Geneva, Manchester, Eastbourne and Nottingham. Clients listed on their site include Alexandra Palace Bierfest, The London Bierfest, Harrods Christmas Parade, Microsoft Dublin, Mercedes AMG and DHL. Television and radio credits include So Graham Norton on Channel 4, Richard and Judy, and the Today programme on BBC Radio 4.
